This story depicts the battle of an aging and rapidly weakening Solid Snake. Players can carry out advanced infiltration missions that utilize all five senses, with tools such as the Octo Camo that let them automatically blend in with their surroundings, and a threat ring that warns them of nearby threats.

After the tragic loss of The Boss, Big Boss forms a private mercenary group and devises the Peace Walker Incident, in order to acquire a Metal Gear. This game not only features missions to infiltrate enemy strongholds, but also operational elements where players must manage and grow the facility known as Mother Base. Players can also go on co-op multiplayer missions.
